Hier und Jetzt

Im Zen-Buddhismus geht es, so sagt man, um das Erleben des gegenwärtigen Augenblicks. Nun ist die Musik des Hamburger Quartetts House of Zen sicher kein religiöser Begleitsoundtrack, aber eine meditative, oder zumindest beruhigende Wirkung hat sie durchaus. Folk und der Westcoast-Sound der 1960er stehen Pate – doch die ehemals unter dem Namen Mountaineer firmierende Band um den Songwriter Henning Wandhoff gewinnt daraus einen ganz und gar zeitgenössischen Entwurf: elegant, charmant und reich an Texturen.

Einen Gang herunterschalten und die unbeschwerte Leichtigkeit des Sommers genießen. Diese Golden Glades-Ausgabe möchte die Umstellung auf den Ferienmodus mit entsprechender Musik unterstützen. Als hilfreich erweisen sich saisonale Tracks u.a. von The National Jazz Trio Of Scotland sowie das brasilianische Projekt Sessa.

Myrtle Soup und Roy’s Garage

Golden Glades schöpft wieder einmal aus dem Vollen. Wir widmen uns u.a. den sensationellen Melodiebögen von E.R. Jurken und dem jazzy Space-Pop der Vanishing Twins. Daneben erhalten zwei Veröffentlichungen besondere Aufmerksamkeit:

Der britische Songwriter John Myrtle landet auf der Suche nach einem eigenen Sound im Pop der Sixties. Sein Album «Myrtle Soup» versammelt liebenswürdige Songs, die gelegentlich an goldene Hits der Herman’s Hermits erinnern. Zwar lächelt Myrtle auf den Promofotos mindestens so charmant wie der frühe Jonathan Richman, doch zwischendurch offenbart er auf diesem Solodebüt auch mal seine melancholische Seite.

Ebenfalls ein Connaisseur ist der in Toronto ansässige Künstler ROY. Er fühlt sich streng der Zeitperiode zwischen 1966 und ‘68 verpflichtet, bedient jedoch eher die obskure Variante, flirtet mit Garagenrock und wirren Konzepten. Nach dem letztjährigen «Peace, Love And Outer Space» trägt sein neues Album den Titel «Roy’s Garage». Es hat durchaus sonderbare, aber auch geniale Momente – und genauso mögen wir’s bei Golden Glades.

Marmor, Schnauz und Tränen

Raoul Vignal ist ein zurückhaltender Herr aus Lyon. Sein Blick ist melancholisch, sein Schnauzbart adrett und sein neues Album wunderbar. Auf «Years In Marble» wird Vignals sanfte Stimme mit Fingerpicking und dezentem Schlagwerk in Szene gesetzt. Geschmeidig phrasiert wirken seine Songs und dramaturgisch lebhaft. Sie fügen sich zu einer zeitlosen Kollektion.

Ebenso aus der Zeit gefallen scheint die kalifornische Musikerin Sarah Gagnon. Wenn sie als Hectorine die Bühne entert, könnte man sich an «Chelsea Girl» von Nico erinnert fühlen, denn Gagnons Folksongs werden von ihrem dunklen Timbre getragen. Auf dem Zweitling «TEARS» legt Hectorine ihre Stimme mal über Streicher, mal über Beats, und manchmal driftet sie in Spoken Word-Gefilde ab.

Monodramen & Alleinunterhaltende

Heute widmen wir uns einer besonderen Spezies Musikschaffender: den Alleinunterhaltern. Bei ihnen liegen für gewöhnlich sämtliche Produktionsschritte in einer Hand, vom Songwriting über die Instrumentierung und Produktion bis hin zum Coverdesign. Mitunter erstaunlich, wie die einzelne Person es hinbekommt, einen tadellos kompakten Bandsound zu kreieren – und das nicht erst, seit Computerprogramme das Aufnehmen von Musik in den heimischen vier Wänden erleichtern.

Am 13. Mai ist es wieder einmal soweit: Der Eurovision Song Contest wird über den Bildschirm flimmern und gnadenlos vorführen, wie schlecht es derzeit um die internationale Popmusik steht. Eigentlich schade, denn wer richtig sucht, findet auch in den entlegensten Ecken der Welt hörenswerte Musikprojekte. Sandra Zettpunkt hat eine entsprechende Auswahl getroffen: Aktuelle Künstlerinnen und Künstler gehen heute bei Golden Glades für ihr jeweiliges Land an den Start und liefern damit eine Alternative zum notorischen ESC-Trash.
